Systems Engineering Verification and Validation Lead at BWX Technologies

Deon Brown ’90 joined the St. Martin’s community as a sophomore, quickly discovering a school environment that prioritized both academic rigor and personal growth. Though he entered without the early childhood ties many of his classmates shared, Deon found a welcoming and inclusive campus where students were encouraged to connect across grade levels, try new things, and develop leadership through involvement. His participation in a variety of clubs allowed him to build lasting relationships and gain confidence in his place at St. Martin’s. After graduating from St. Martin’s, Deon went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia and later a Master’s degree in Space Studies from the University of North Dakota. He now serves as the Systems Engineering Verification and Validation Lead at BWX Technologies, where he plays a vital role in the development and delivery of advanced nuclear and aerospace technologies. Looking back, Deon credits St. Martin’s for helping him grow into the kind of leader who can adapt, collaborate, and thrive in high-stakes, future-forward industries. “The connections I made and the confidence I built at St. Martin’s set the foundation for everything that came after,” he shares. “It’s where I learned to take initiative, step outside my comfort zone, and become part of something bigger than myself.” Deon’s story reflects the St. Martin’s promise: to prepare students not just for college, but for purpose, leadership, and lifelong success.

Christina Vial Comer ’91 discovered her passion for performance on the St. Martin’s stage, and today, she nurtures that same spark in the next generation of Saints. Joining the St. Martin’s community in 8th grade, Christina quickly immersed herself in the performing arts, landing a lead role in Pirates of Penzance. Her involvement in choir and annual All-State Honor Choir selections solidified her commitment to music. Christina pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of the South, drawn by its Episcopal heritage and expansive natural setting, reminiscent of St. Martin’s Outdoor Education program. Initially on a pre-med track, she soon recognized her true calling in music. She earned a Master’s of Music and a postgraduate diploma in operatic performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. As a lyric soprano, Christina has graced stages in roles such as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Musetta in La Bohème, and has been a featured soloist in major works like Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem. Returning to St. Martin’s in 2022 as the Choir Director for Middle and Upper Schools, Christina continues to enrich the school’s musical legacy. Under her leadership, the choirs have flourished, performing complex pieces and even opening for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom, as she directs school musicals and mentors students in vocal performance. Christina’s journey reflects the enduring impact of a St. Martin’s education. “St. Martin’s provided a nurturing environment that encouraged me to explore and develop my talents,” she shares. “It’s a privilege to return and contribute to the same community that shaped my path.” Her story exemplifies the school’s commitment to cultivating individuals who are not only academically prepared but also inspired to lead with purpose and passion.

Margot Castaing Rainold ’02 is a creative force in New Orleans’ design and real estate scene, blending artistic vision with entrepreneurial drive—a journey that began during her 14 years at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. As a proud member of the 14-Year Club, Margot credits the school’s close-knit, faith-based community for shaping her values and nurturing her talents. She fondly recalls the strength of the English department, with teachers like Mr. Greg Williams and Mrs. Dianne Greer, and was particularly inspired by Dean Chuck Rivet’s Far East Studies class. Athletics also played a significant role in her development, with coaches Sue Edwards and Linda Trevino leaving a lasting impact—so much so that Margot continues to play tennis and has passed that passion on to her children. Margot pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Art History at the University of Alabama, followed by studies in interior design at Delgado Community College. After gaining experience in residential construction, she earned her real estate license in 2014 and co-founded M&M Residential. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Maison de Luca Design, LLC, where she offers custom interior design services that reflect her clients' unique visions. Reflecting on her time at St. Martin’s, Margot shares, “When you’re at a place for so long, it shapes almost every part of you. I loved being part of this small community that is faith-based and all about service. Margot’s journey exemplifies the St. Martin’s mission to cultivate individuals who are not only academically prepared but also inspired to lead lives of purpose and creativity.

Chike Ozah ’96 is a visionary filmmaker and storyteller whose journey from the halls of St. Martin’s Episcopal School to the forefront of the entertainment industry exemplifies the transformative power of passion, faith, and purpose. As one half of the acclaimed directing duo Coodie & Chike, Chike has co-created compelling narratives that resonate across cultures and generations. Returning to his alma mater as a Ring Day speaker, Chike shared insights from his remarkable career, encouraging students to discover and pursue their passions. He emphasized the importance of aligning one's talents with faith, stating, “Find what you love and then connect that with faith. Connect your passion, faith, and goals together.” His message underscored the enduring values instilled at St. Martin’s, where a foundation of faith and community support empowers students to navigate life’s challenges with confidence. Chike’s reflections serve as a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing individuals who are not only academically prepared but also equipped to lead lives of purpose and impact. Walter F. Becker, Jr. ’74 is the 66th President of the Sugar Bowl Committee, a role that underscores his lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and community impact. A graduate of St. Martin’s Episcopal School, Walter earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Tulane University, and embarked on a legal career marked by excellence and dedication. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Orleans Parish and later as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Louisiana, where he held positions including First Assistant U.S. Attorney and Chief of the Criminal Division. Currently, he is a Partner at Chaffe McCall, LLP, leading the firm's Criminal Investigations and White-Collar Criminal Defense Section. His legal expertise has been recognized by numerous organizations, including Chambers USA, Martindale-Hubbell, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers. Walter's leadership extends beyond the courtroom. As President of the Sugar Bowl Committee, he oversees one of college football's most prestigious events, including the Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, which serves as a College Football Playoff Quarterfinal. Under his guidance, the Sugar Bowl continues to have a significant positive impact on the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana, both economically and culturally. Walter Becker’s story exemplifies the enduring influence of a St. Martin’s education in cultivating leaders who make meaningful contributions to their communities and professions.

Real Estate Leader, Philanthropist

Robert W. “Bob” Merrick ’62 was a visionary leader, philanthropist, and proud alumnus whose generosity continues to shape the future of St. Martin’s Episcopal School. Bob joined St. Martin’s in 8th grade and quickly became an active member of the school community—co-captaining the football team, earning All-State honors in track, and being named “Most Popular” by his peers his senior year. After earning his degree from Tulane University, Bob built an extraordinary career in real estate, ultimately serving as Chairman of the Board of NAI Latter & Blum. Known for his business acumen and generous spirit, he became the first Louisianan to join the United Way Million Dollar Roundtable and was honored with the inaugural Tocqueville Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob’s commitment to giving back was deeply rooted in his gratitude for St. Martin’s. His gifts to the school made possible the Merrick Visual Arts Center, the Latter & Blum Track, and the Merrick Conference Room—visible reminders of his enduring belief in the school’s mission. In his own words, “I have been blessed, and that means I have an obligation to help others.” A recipient of the Martin de Tours Award, Bob Merrick passed away in April 2025. His legacy lives on in the opportunities he created for generations of Saints to come.

Barbara Farris ’94, a standout athlete and dedicated coach, continues to exemplify the values of St. Martin’s Episcopal School through her commitment to excellence in athletics and mentorship. Joining St. Martin’s as a sophomore, Barbara quickly made her mark by leading the Saints to back-to-back basketball state titles in 1993 and 1994, including an undefeated 36–0 season. Her prowess extended to track and field, where she secured two state championships. These accomplishments earned her All-State honors and later induction into the St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and again in 2015 as part of the 1993 championship team. At Tulane University, Barbara became the first player in program history to earn all-conference honors four consecutive years, leading the Green Wave to four straight NCAA tournament appearances. She was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. Barbara's professional career spanned a decade in the WNBA, highlighted by a championship with the Detroit Shock in 2003. She also played internationally in France, Spain, and South Korea. Transitioning into coaching, Barbara has held assistant coaching positions with the New York Liberty, Stetson University, and Southern Miss. In April 2025, she joined Texas State University as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team, bringing a wealth of experience and a champion's mindset to the Bobcats. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Barbara remains deeply connected to St. Martin’s, serving on the Board of Trustees. Reflecting on her time at the school, she shared, “I just remember feeling supported and safe. This school felt warm and inviting, and I remember when I came for my visit and met everyone, I felt a genuine sense of home on this campus.” Barbara Farris’s journey from a standout student-athlete to a dedicated coach and trustee exemplifies the values of St. Martin’s Episcopal School, highlighting the school's role in shaping individuals prepared for college, purpose, and leadership.

The Rev. Dr. Fred D. Devall IV ’87 embodies the enduring values of St. Martin’s Episcopal School—faith, scholarship, and service. A proud member of a multi-generational legacy family, Fred attended St. Martin’s from 1980 to 1987, following in the footsteps of his father, a 1956 graduate. Fred’s formative years at St. Martin’s were marked by meaningful experiences that shaped his spiritual journey. Notably, a senior-year service project at the New Orleans Home for Adults left a lasting impression, influencing his college application essay and reinforcing his commitment to service. He also recalls the profound impact of daily chapel services, particularly the “General Thanksgivings” prayer, which resonated deeply with him. After graduating, Fred pursued a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources at the University of the South, Sewanee, followed by a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He later returned to Sewanee to earn a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching, focusing his dissertation on “Preaching Through Prolonged Climate Crisis,” merging his environmental interests with his ministry. As the Rector of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Metairie, Fred continues to serve the community that nurtured him. His leadership extends to the school's Board of Trustees, where he contributes to guiding the institution's mission. Fred's dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in his role leading the Environmental Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, focusing on worship, policy, education, and field experiences. Fred’s legacy at St. Martin’s is further enriched by his sons, both 14-Year Club members, who graduated in 2018 and 2021. Reflecting on their shared experiences, Fred notes, “Certainly the school’s continued dedication to its pillars of Faith, Scholarship, and Service stand out. Faith has been an integral component of the school since it was founded, so I am thankful that my sons and I shared that faith aspect throughout our time as students.” The Rev. Dr. Fred D. G. Bruce Parkerson ’75, a dedicated member of St. Martin’s 13-Year Club, reflects on his formative years at the school with deep appreciation. He fondly recalls the adventures of Lower School, including events like Heavenly Days, and the compassionate challenges presented by teachers such as Mrs. Shepherd and Miss Shilling. In Upper School, educators like Belle Johnson, Mrs. West, Mr. Graf, Ms. Bolles, Mr. Latham, Ms. Saik, Ms. Burkes, and Pedro Perez left lasting impressions, nurturing his academic growth and personal development. Art teachers Carolyn Boone and Mary Sue Nelson Roniger ’60 ignited his enduring passion for art during classes held in the old barn above the cafeteria. Bruce pursued higher education at Southern Methodist University, earning a BBA in 1979 and a JD in 1982. He is now a partner at Plauché Maselli Parkerson LLP. Reflecting on his time at St. Martin’s, Bruce states, “When I think back to my time at St. Martin’s, I really just think about how I had a lot of really good teachers who truly cared.” As current Chairman of the St. Martin’s Board of Trustees, Bruce is committed to supporting the school's leadership and fostering a strong community. He emphasizes the importance of alumni engagement, encouraging fellow Saints to contribute their time, talents, and resources to uphold the school's mission. Bruce's journey exemplifies the lasting impact of a St. Martin’s education in shaping individuals prepared for college, purpose, and leadership.
