Pre-K - Grade 4
St. Martin’s Lower School curriculum builds on the strong foundation developed in George Cottage, using a hands-on approach that makes learning part of everything the students do.
Lower School classes are small by design, ensuring a low student-teacher ratio. Our challenging learning environment coupled with talented, nurturing faculty and staff ensures our Lower School students are supported as they strive to reach their full potential.
At St. Martin’s, Lower School classrooms are lively and engaging. Students actively participate in lessons designed to build and develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Teachers intentionally differentiate instruction, ensuring deep and meaningful learning for every student.
In addition to core academic subjects, our students also benefit from gifted professionals who teach music, physical education, religion, science, art, life skills, Spanish, and computer science. Optional after-school enrichment programs reinforce lessons learned throughout the day.
The Innovation + Design Program integrates problem solving into the curriculum and promotes collaboration within the Lower School. Students look forward to working on a variety of design thinking activities in the well-equipped STeaM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) Lab which features a 3D scanner, 3D printers, as well as a suite of programmable robots that develop not only computational thinking but also the fundamentals of coding, robotics, and computer science.
Our Curriculum
Part of our academically challenging curriculum includes an emphasis on weekly participation in a range of specialized topic areas. Students attend enrichment classes in library, computer science, music, art, science, Spanish, and physical education. Beginning in third grade, students transition to departmentalized academics for language arts and math as we prepare them for success in Middle School.
