Fourth Grade Learns About Rosh Hashanah
October 13th, 2024
The Fourth Grade class has been reading the novel “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry this trimester. The story is set during the Nazi occupation of Denmark during World War II. Students learned how the Danish people tried to protect and save their Jewish citizens. A pivotal part of the plot occurs during the Jewish New Year.
Katie Dunn (mother of Emma ‘33, Molly ‘29, and Noah ‘26) spoke to the fourth graders about Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year celebration. She brought in apples, honey, challah (bread) as well as a shofar (ram’s horn) and explained how Rosh Hashanah is celebrated.
As an Episcopal school, St. Martin’s seeks to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and [to] respect the dignity of every human being,” [BCP, 305]. Because we have so promised, it is indeed an act of Christian faithfulness to be in openhearted relationship with people whose religions differ from ours. We love to share and learn from all our students and their families’ faith traditions.
