Eighth Graders Learn About Veterans Day Through Cross-Disciplinary Project

November 11th, 2024

Eighth graders recently embarked on a powerful learning experience that culminated in a Veterans Day Assembly for Middle and Upper School students. The students explored the history and significance of Veterans Day in their English and Social Studies classes, and gained a deeper understanding of the holiday by interviewing veterans.

After finding out the veteran’s branch of the military, rank, years of service and where he/she was stationed, students researched those areas so that they could craft good questions to prepare for their interview. They also wrote informative essays with the facts they gathered.

After interviewing their veteran, each group of students created a transcript of their interview, along with an introduction of the veteran and a conclusion that reflected upon the interview experience. Finally, students worked on multi-genre projects to showcase their veterans and/or the branch of the military to which they belonged.

On Veterans Day, November 11, the eighth grade hosted an assembly featuring prayers, historical information, patriotic songs, and a keynote address by veteran Frank Gendusa, St. Martin’s athletic director. Students’ work was displayed in the Saints Hall lobby for visitors to peruse after the Veterans Day Assembly.

Special thanks go to Betsy Fox, Emma Massengale, Julie Warren, St. Martin’s Choir, and Frank Gendusa for their work on this extraordinary project.
