The Fine Arts Department is Taking Flight!
September 26th, 2023
The Fine Arts Department is focusing on the theme of “Take Flight” this year. The theme will be reflected in performances, projects, and music throughout the school year and during Arts Week in the spring. Here’s a sneak peek into the arts at StM for the 2023-24 school year:
Faculty Art Show
We will highlight flight-themed work in the upcoming Faculty Art Show, held in the Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design, October 2-5.
Lower School Visual Arts
Lower School visual art students have been drawing and collaging their own bee environments. They learned the difference between foreground, middle ground, and background, and that smaller objects are farther away from the viewer than larger objects.
Upper School Visual Arts
Our Upper School visual arts students have been camouflaging butterflies in the Merrick Visual Arts Center. Some Upper School art students did a good job of hiding their work in plain sight! Ceramics students created clay whistles and transformed their pieces into a flight-themed sculpture.
Middle School Band and Upper School Band
The Middle School band is working on a percussion song called “Trio in Flight” and the Upper School band is working on “Blue Skies.” This is just a taste of what is to come at our spring Arts Fest performance!
Performing Arts to NYC
StM’s Performing Arts Department is taking flight to the Big Apple to perform in Radio City Music Hall as opening entertainment, The Sounds of Christmas, for the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes.
“Singin’ in the Rain, Jr.”
At home, we look to the skies as we produce “Singin’ in the Rain, Jr.” (See below for ticket information.) This ambitious production symbolizes our collective faculty and students, stretching our artistic wings to reach new heights! New skills, new growth, all aimed at taking flight as artists and StM community members.
Tickets are now available! Middle and Upper School students will take the stage of the Solomon Theater for two splashy performances on October 13 and 14. You don’t want to miss this! Get tickets now.
“The Music Man, Jr.”
In the spring, students from 3rd-12th grades will rise to the occasion and soar to new heights in Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man, Jr.”
